NHS Presents Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream

Blue Mid Summer Night's DreamWhen Shakespeare wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream late in the 16th or early 17th century he set his play in ancient Athens, Greece and drew upon classical mythology for the characters of Theseus and Hippolyta. His audience could relate to the story and his language.  While the plays of Shakespeare are very relevant for today, many audiences get caught up in the language and references.  To help our audiences, Fine and Performing Arts Director and HS theater teacher, Steve Miller, decided to use music and settings that were more familiar, yet still tied to the themes presented in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Natick’s production of the play is set in 2015 and is a dream of a love-scorned student, Helena.  Her dream introduces us to Theseus and Hippolyta.  Our Thesus, instead of living sometime in early B.C. days as a classic warrior kinsman of fabled Hercules, is the recently re-elected mayor of Athens, a small town with very conservative values:  a small town where family is important,  a small town where Mom and Dad’s decisions are ultimate,  a small town with a 1950’s feel. Just beyond the gates of Athens is the unrestricted forest.  The forest is not conservative and is the entry point to self-indulgence and pride, kind of a 1980’s type of place.   This is not to say that the 80’s and 50’s were only bad and 2015 is only good.  But rather to borrow from popular culture and some of its criticisms to make A Midsummer Night’s Dream more readily identifiable to an audience.

Student leaders run all aspects of design, music, choreography, costuming, lights and set creation under Mr. Miller’s direction.

$10 for Adults, $8 for Students and Seniors

Show times:  November 27, 28 and December 4 at 7:30pm, December 5 at 3pm at NHS Auditorium
