Wilson Crowns New Geography Bee Champion

On January 15, 2016 eighth grader Adrian Staples won the Wilson Middle School championship for the 2016 National Geographic Geography Bee.  The Geography Bee is a competition of geography knowledge for students in the fourth through eighth grades, and is conducted in thousands of schools across the country.  Students at Wilson first competed in their social studies classes against their classmates to earn a spot in the final 10.

The ten finalists were:

Sam Posner – 5th grade

Kaya Rivkin Haag – 5th grade

Joey Knapik – 6th grade

Jessica Harriss – 6th grade

Calvin Smith – 7th grade

Justin Ashman – 7th grade

Max Freedman – 7th grade

Neal Bold – 8th grade

Adrian Staples – 8th grade

Keith Richards – 8th grade

In a thrilling game that went to several tie-breaker questions, Adrian narrowly edged out 6th grader Joey Knapik to capture the school title.  Next up for Adrian is the state qualifying test, and if he scores well enough, a trip to the state Geography Bee finals where he would compete against student winners from all across Massachusetts.

The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners to participate in the Bee national championship rounds May 22-25, 2016. The first- place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and a National Geographic Expeditions trip to a national park in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

Thank you to all the social studies teachers for administering the preliminary rounds, good work to all students who participated, and special congratulations to the ten finalists.  And to Adrian: study hard for the state test – luck has nothing to do with it!
